Governmental Commission on Missing Persons

The Governmental Commission on Missing Persons is a governmental body which supervises and coordinates activities regarding the clarification of the fate of missing persons as a result of the Kosovo war, regardless of their ethnic background, religion, military or civil status. The Commission shall inform family members of the fate of missing persons, and shall cooperate with their associations, exercising its activity in cooperation with local and international institutions and organisations, the Public Prosecution Office, courts and other entities authorised to collect data on missing persons. The Commission also coordinates activities with international and local institutions on the construction of monuments to honour the missing persons. Relevant public authorities such as Foreign Affairs, Justice, Internal Affairs and Local Government Administration, within their areas of responsibilities, shall cooperate with the Commission by providing available information and assistance.

Following its country visit, The UN WGEID, noted the efforts made by the Commission and was informed that the principle of non-discrimination had been given importance in the work of the Commission to ensure that the rights of all families of missing persons are guaranteed, regardless of their ethnic background, religion or military or civil status. However, the Working Group also noted that the seat on the Commission that is reserved for ethnic minority groups had been vacant for some time before its visit and called on the State to ensure minority groups are adequately represented in the Commission on Missing Persons and that it ensure in practice the implementation of the principle of non-discrimination.
